Navaratri: The 9 Divine Nights

"Nava-ratri" literally means "nine nights." This festival is observed twice a year, once in the beginning of summer and again at the onset of winter.

What's the Significance of Navratri?
During Navaratri, we invoke the energy aspect of God in the form of the universal mother, commonly referred to as "Durga," which literally means the remover of miseries of life. She is also referred to as "Devi" (goddess) or "Shakti" (energy or power). It is this energy, which helps God to proceed with the work of creation, preservation and destruction. In other words, you can say that God is motionless, absolutely changeless, and the Divine Mother Durga, does everything. Truly speaking, our worship of Shakti re-confirms the scientific theory that energy is imperishable. It cannot be created or destroyed. It is always there.

Why Worship the Mother Goddess?
We think this energy is only a form of the Divine Mother, who is the mother of all, and all of us are her children. "Why mother; why not father?", you may ask. Let me just say that we believe that God's glory, his cosmic energy, his greatness and supremacy can best be depicted as the motherhood aspect of God. Just as a child finds all these qualities in his or her mother, similarly, all of us look upon God as mother. In fact, Hinduism is the only religion in the world, which gives so much importance to the mother aspect of God because we believe that mother is the creative aspect of the absolute.

Why Twice a Year?
Every year the beginning of summer and the beginning of winter are two very important junctures of climatic change and solar influence. These two junctions have been chosen as the sacred opportunities for the worship of the divine power because:
(1) We believe that it is the divine power that provides energy for the earth to move around the sun, causing the changes in the outer nature and that this divine power must be thanked for maintaining the correct balance of the universe.

(2) Due to the changes in the nature, the bodies and minds of people undergo a considerable change, and hence, we worship the divine power to bestow upon all of us enough potent powers to maintain our physical and mental balance.

Why Nine Nights & Days?
Navaratri is divided into sets of three days to adore different aspects of the supreme goddess. On the first three days, the Mother is invoked as powerful force called Durga in order to destroy all our impurities, vices and defects. The next three days, the Mother is adored as a giver of spiritual wealth, Lakshmi, who is considered to have the power of bestowing on her devotees the inexhaustible wealth. The final set of three days is spent in worshipping the mother as the goddess of wisdom, Saraswati. In order have all-round success in life, we need the blessings of all three aspects of the divine mother; hence, the worship for nine nights.

The merits of performing severe tapas, millions of japa and devata pujana are attain by just feeding a hungry person. The person who feeds the needy is like a person who gave them life.

Every single anna (rice ) contain in the food given to the poor and the needy will destroy the sin done in one birth!

The vedaas hail anna (food) as the form of Brahman as it’s the source of life. ( annam bramhethi vyajaanaat)This can be seen in thaitiriya Upanishad

Upaya kula vishuddham koti kanya pradaanam

Nahi nahi bahu daanam annadaanam samaapa

The merit obtained by doing one single annadaana cannot be compared even to the daana phala of thousand elephants, horses and cattels, by giving a way thousands of gifts made of gold and silver, by giving the whole land and sea on earth, by conducting kanya daana (wedding) for 1 crore kanyas.

This shows the greatness of annadaana.

Annadaana is a very important part in mantra purascarana . where one has to perform dashamsa homa, dashamsa tarpana and dashamsa annadaana. Without annadaana mantra siddhi is not achieveable and the purascarana is incomplete.the whole benefit of the mantra siddhi is obtained through this annadaana. The reason behind this is, annadaana removes the shortcomings in the purascarana karma and makes it complete.it removes the bakti lobha, mantra lobha and kriya lobha.. And bestows perfection.

Our guruji always say “…. If u ask me whether a person who has done millions of japa and did severe tapas is higher or the person who has fed 100 people in his lifetime….. the answer will be the person who fed the 100 persons”

all the punya phalas promised in the scriptures are attained easily by feeding the poors and the sadhus. Normal persons who don’t know how to do worship, japa etc can get the similar benefit in multiple folds by just feeding the needy and the sadhus.

If u give money to a person he will not be satisfied, if u give gold, vastra etc… still the same…. He will want more…….but he can only eat until his stomach gets full. He himself will say enough and goes home satisfied.

Feeding the sadhus and shiva baktas ia a great blessings for mankind. Its like feeding shiva himself , as they are the human form of shiva. Its very rare to get an opportunity to feed a holy men. If got…. It shouldn’t be missed. Feeding a holy men can remove all our obstacles in life and spiritual path, and it blesses with wisdom. All past karmas are washed away the moment you feed a sadhu. Thats the power of annadaana!

Researching Idol-Worship

Good afternoon (again!). I am presently researching the subject of idol-worship around the world, so...I was wondering if anyone might be aware of any primary source material (perhaps from Hindu scripture), or even from ethnographic studies that speak about the Hindu belief and practices associated with idols--anything at all! However, many fascets I have found associated with idol-worship/installation that are common are (particularly in the first two!): the inhabitation of the deity into the statue for his or her worshippers; some sort oif "activation" rites, such as the "mouth opening" ceremony from Mesopotamia and Egypt (withouyt these the deity cannot hear the prayers, or smell the incense and other offerings, etc.); but I have also found the belief in Mesopoitamia where sculpture's that carve the idols usually disassociate themselves from the creation of the image, preferring to view it instead, rather, as the creation of the deity, than of mankind.

Samputita Sri Suktam

Back in January I decided to learn the Sri Suktam (incudling the Samputita form). I finally finished memorizing it - which is not all that impressive since it is just 16 rather short slokas. But for me it was a big deal! When I first started I thought it would be relatively easy, but after I learned the first several slokas it became much more difficult for some reason. But then once I got past that stage (which took a long time!) it started to become much more natural.

I have two recordings which I have been using, and I also have the devanagari and the romanized transcription. And I have a very loose, interpretative translation as well. But I am wondering if anyone can recommend a more literal translation (especially if there is one online somewhere)?

Also, if anyone knows of any more detailed commentaries on Sri Suktam I would be very interested in that!

Flowers Dedicated to Lakshmi

Hey, I was wondering if anyone could advise me about any Hindu scripture that contains writings where various flowers are dedicated to Lakshmi. I know that lotuses are famously associated with her. And, I have *heard* that honeysuckle and jasmine is dedicated to her, but I have not been able to substantiate this allegation through any search (so far!). Now, by "dedicated", I would say that sandalwood is dedicated to Ganesha because it was from a sandalwood paste that Parvati formed the god; while I would also say that roses were dedicated to Aphrodite, not only because they were sometimes offered to her on her altar, but that roses were believed to have sprung from her tears after Adonis was goared by a boar (although, sometimes it was thought to have been poppies).

Thanks a lot! She is a goddess whom I greatly admire, and I adore making ritual anointing oils and incense devoted to many beautiful deities!

māyā-śaktir duratyayā

TRANSLATION

My Lord Viṣṇu and mother Lakṣmī, goddess of fortune, you are the proprietors of the entire creation. Indeed, you are the cause of the creation. Mother Lakṣmī is extremely difficult to understand because she is so powerful that the jurisdiction of her power is difficult to overcome. Mother Lakṣmī is represented in the material world as the external energy, but actually she is always the internal energy of the Lord.

Śrīmad Bhāgavatam 6.19.12

tasyā adhīśvaraḥ sākṣāt

tvam eva puruṣaḥ paraḥ

tvaḿ sarva-yajña ijyeyaḿ

kriyeyaḿ phala-bhug bhavān

TRANSLATION

My Lord, You are the master of energy, and therefore You are the Supreme Person. You are sacrifice [yajña] personified. Lakṣmī, the embodiment of spiritual activities, is the original form of worship offered unto You, whereas You are the enjoyer of all sacrifices.

Śrīmad Bhāgavatam 6.19.13

guṇa-vyaktir iyaḿ devī

vyañjako guṇa-bhug bhavān

tvaḿ hi sarva-śarīry ātmā

śrīḥ śarīrendriyāśayāḥ

nāma-rūpe bhagavatī

pratyayas tvam apāśrayaḥ

TRANSLATION

Mother Lakṣmī, who is here, is the reservoir of all spiritual qualities, whereas You manifest and enjoy all these qualities. Indeed, You are actually the enjoyer of everything. You live as the Supersoul of all living entities, aid the goddess of fortune is the form of their bodies, senses and minds. She also has a holy name and form, whereas You are the support of all such names and forms and the cause for their manifestation.

PURPORT

Madhvācārya, the ācārya of the Tattvavādīs, has described this verse in the following way: "Viṣṇu is described as yajña personified, and mother Lakṣmī is described as spiritual activities and the original form of worship. In fact, they represent spiritual activities and the Supersoul of all yajña. Lord Viṣṇu is the Supersoul even of Lakṣmīdevī, but no one can be the Supersoul of Lord Viṣṇu, for Lord Viṣṇu Himself is the spiritual Supersoul of everyone."

According to Madhvācārya, there are two tattvas, or factors. One is independent, and the other is dependent. The first tattva is the Supreme Lord, Viṣṇu, and the second is the jīva-tattva. Lakṣmīdevī, being dependent on Lord Viṣṇu, is sometimes counted among the jīvas. The Gauḍīya Vaiṣṇavas, however, describe Lakṣmīdevī in accordance with the following two verses from the Prameya-ratnāvalī of Baladeva Vidyābhūṣaṇa. The first verse is a quotation from the Viṣṇu Purāṇa.

nityaiva sā jagan-mātā

viṣṇoḥ śrīr anapāyinī

yathā sarva-gato viṣṇus

tathaiveyaḿ dvijottama

viṣṇoḥ syuḥ śaktayas tisras

tāsu yā kīrtitā parā

saiva śrīs tad-abhinneti

prāha śiṣyān prabhur mahān

"O best of the brāhmaṇas, Lakṣmījī is the constant companion of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Viṣṇu, and therefore she is called anapāyinī. She is the mother of all creation. As Lord Viṣṇu is all-pervading, His spiritual potency, mother Lakṣmī, is also all-pervading." Lord Viṣṇu has three principal potencies — internal, external and marginal. Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu has accepted parā-śakti, the spiritual energy of the Lord, as being identical with the Lord. Thus she is also included in the independent viṣṇu-tattva."

In the Kānti-mālā commentary on the Prameya-ratnāvalī there is this statement: nanu kvacit nitya-mukta jīvatvaḿ lakṣmyāḥ svīkṛtaḿ, tatrāha — prāheti. nityaiveti padye sarva-vyāpti-kathanena kalākāṣṭhety ādi-padya-dvaye, śuddho 'pīty uktā ca mahāprabhunā svaśiṣyān prati lakṣmyā bhagavad-advaitam upadiṣṭam. kvacid yat tasyās tu dvaitam uktaḿ, tat tu tad-āviṣṭa-nitya-mukta jīvam ādāya sańgatamas tu. "Although some authoritative Vaiṣṇava disciplic successions count the goddess of fortune among the ever-liberated living entities (jīvas) in Vaikuṇṭha, Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu, in accordance with the statement in the Viṣṇu Purāṇa, has described Lakṣmī as being identical with the viṣṇu-tattva. The correct conclusion is that the descriptions of Lakṣmī as being different from Viṣṇu are stated when an eternally liberated living entity is imbued with the quality of Lakṣmī; they do not pertain to mother Lakṣmī, the eternal consort of Lord Viṣṇu."

Real natural Sindoor/Kumkum

Sindoor or Vermillion is the red paste applied to the forehead as tilakam, and used in Pujas. The commerical Sindoor sold over the counter contains Lead Oxides and is actually very toxic. I found that my headaches and twitching was caused by my exposure to sindoor that contains lead.

Recipe:
1 part tumeric
1 part slaked like/hydrated lime/calcium hydroxide
A little water.

Mix all these and the yellow tumeric will turn a brilliant red. Make sure to get all the pastey lime mixed in well with the tumeric. This is much better for you and much better for your puja.

Our first relationship in the world is through the mother. The earliest memory of any person is that of clinging to the mother's breast and looking into her love-filled eyes. The comfort and security, which the infant gains from this relationship, lasts with him all his life. In the mother is centred a whole world of tenderness, comfort and sustenance. To transfer this concept to a cosmic being was a natural step, which all the ancient cultures took. Therefore the concept of the divine as the mother is as old as life itself. Devi is the Divine Mother, the eternal womb of all creatures -- human, sub-human and animal. She cradles her children in her loving arms, suckles them and nurtures them with her infinite love. Wherever you see maternal love, in a bird or animal or human, know that to be the love of the Devi for her children, for she is the universal mother.

Dattatreya creation story

I've been wanting to tell this story for a while.

it's one of my favorite favorite stories in the Vedic tradition, since it involves the greatest of all divine teachers, Dattatreya, from whom all lineages and all traditions originate, whether people practicing those traditions or religions recognize him as the origin.

since the story ALSO features the three goddesses, including Maha Laxmi, I think it's particularly fun. it cracks me up that the goddesses in this tale, as in many stories, aren't particularly acting very 'goddesslike,' that's to say -- in an 'enlightened' way. they're jealous and petty, crafty and even a little malicious, not unlike the Greek pantheon.

it goes like this -- there was a great rishi named Atri, an extraordinary rishi. his wife, Anasuya, was, as you might imagine, also an exceptional character. her austerities were so strong that she once literally stopped the sun from shining in order to help out one of her devotees.

her name, Anasuya, means, 'without jealousy.' she was modest and capable, brilliant and loving.

so of course, her pure nature being what it was, it attracted the attention and then the inevitable jealousy of the three goddesses, Parvati, Saraswati, and Laxmi, the wives of the three major gods in creation, Shiva, Brahma and Vishnu.

together, these mischievous women (clearly ladies with too much time on their hands!) decided to play a malicious trick on Anasuya, and sent their husbands to her with an outrageous plan to insult her.

the three husbands, at the command of their wives, show up at Anasuya's door. because in the Vedic tradition, a houseguest is considered an expression of god, it's essential that a host honors any and all requests of a guest, according them the same respect and service one would render a god. (only in this case, they really ARE gods, showing up at Anasuya's door!)

Anasuya invites them in, and offers them refreshment. the three gods, in accordance with their wives' orders, ask that she feed them without any clothes on, totally naked.

in India, even today, women are extremely modest (witness the wrapping of a sari!) and such a request, besides being ridiculous, is outrageous in the extreme, an insult to that woman's virtue and purity.

but because the guest is god, Anansuya had of course to acquiesce to this request.

unflappable as she was, she found a perfect way out of the intended offense to her modesty. first, she turned each one of the gods into an infant. then, she stripped off all of her clothes and breast-fed each god, one by one.

thus she turned a prurient interpretation of nudity into a spiritual principle -- where being 'naked' means, stripped of the three gunas, entirely, free from the illusion of the gunas, without attributes at all. she fed the three infant gods, who in their turn, each represent one of the gunas, and of course to a baby a naked breast isn't a lustful sight -- it simply means food is on the way. nourishment.

after she foiled the plot in this way, and fed the babies, Anasuya got dressed once more and went about her duties in her home, serenely. she left the three deities as babies, however, and when her husband Atri got home in the evening, after a day of sadhana, he took in the situation at a glance and was proudly, and rightfully, amused at the attempted trick and his wife's genius in handling such a lila.

eventually, Parvati, Saraswati and Laxmi got to realizing that the day had turned to dusk, and their husbands STILL weren't home. understanding that perhaps something had gone awry, they went themselves to collect their husbands and see what was going on.

imagine their surprise when they were ushered into Anasuya's home only to discover that their husbands were little drooling baby boys!!! not only were they babies, but neither divine goddess could actually recognize their own mates!

Atri, laughing, suggested that Anasuya should restore the gods to their rightful forms, which she did.

the wives were furious, and embarrassed that their plan had backfired so ridiculously on them, and they left in a huff.

the three gods, Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva were so incredibly impressed with Anasuya (and so sheepish at their own collusion in the attempted mockery of her) that they each promised her a boon. they would grant any deep wish she wanted.

Anasuya being way too smart, asked for a baby, a son, from each of the deities' energy. they were happy to comply.

from Brahma, she received Soma, the moon. (also known as Chandra.)

from Shiva, she received Durvasas, a rishi known for his irritability and crankiness as well as his brilliance.

from Vishnu, she received Dattatreya, a most unusual child since he has three heads -- each one representing one of the three gods, the three gunas of creation, the three principles in the cycle of creation, maintenance, and destruction.

Dattatreya went on to lead an illustrious and unorthodox life. he is the original yogi, the original aghori, and the original guru.

Dattatreya -- the son of the amazing rishini Anasuya and the equally amazing rishi Atri, conceived through the energy of Vishnu in response to a lila of illusion from the three goddesses -- is the expert on handling the Mother Divine in all her forms and nature.

his guru, in fact, WAS Nature Herself. Datta had 24 separate gurus from Nature -- the five elements, the sun, the moon, the ocean, a host of animals and insects, each of which taught him some different aspect of the divine and sadhana, and four human beings: a child, a maiden (virgin), a blacksmith, and a prostitute.

Does you all know.. when you see Godess Laxmi devi pics .. you hang in temple. shops and house.. .. if you notice in some pics.. godess have both feets under lotus.. and on some pics.. one feet is out from lotus and one in lotus...

What is diffrence..
If you hang godess laxmi devi picture in your bussiness area. shop, office etc. you should use picture one feet in lotus and one feet out from lotus.. its signifance.. that.. Money come in and out.. means in bussiness you dont want to stop money . you want its circulate in your bussiness.

but in home temple etc. you should only use picture with both feets in the lotus. becuase in home you want money stay in your home.. as way its come u dont want its also move fast out.....

A Tantric Perspective - Everything is Lakshmi

I have been deeply studying yoga and the have become enraptured with the beauty therein. From the plentiful poses to the myriads of miracurlous mantras to the liberating experiences of the scriptures.

The glorious yogis have given us the truth. Everything is one vibration, which is Om.

From Om comes Shiva and Shakti. Shiva is seen as everything, and in the case of Shiva and Shakti, Shiva is the physical world, and Shakti is what moves it. A simple example is a boat is shiva, and the wind that moves it is shakti. Or your mind is shiva, and your thoughts are shakti.

But, as we see in the world of classical science (you know microscopes, mathematical formulas, etc.), which is just as much yoga as the ascthetic meditating in the cave, when we break down the physical beyond atoms, quarks, etc. we see that it is all moving. We only experience stillness because of movement. The floor you are on is solid because it is moving in one fashion and you are moving in another.

This is the experience of shakti. The infinite shoreless ocean of conciousness is called "Chitta", which you could also call Lakshmi. Chitta, in her infinite creativity, attains the entire universe for the pleasure of playing with herself and re-recognizing herself after hiding from herself. A cosmic game of hide and go seek, if you will. This means that everything we experience is really the entire infinite conciousness playing her game. We are this blissful conciousness, indeed she has CHOSEN to be you, so that she may experience herself.

The only way to experience yourself is to experience not yourself. The only way to know that you are you and not me is for you to see you and then see me. We appear different, but there is great joy in experiencing our oneness when we come together and join hands, or dance or sing the same song.

So this is what Chitta has done, she's some infinitely powerful, she wants to delight in her own creation, so she hides herself from herself as us and then unfolds herself back into herself.

That sounds great, what does it mean?

1) We are desire. A lof of yoga seeks to rid ourselves of desires, attachments, thoughts, etc. But, we are desire. Chitta has desired us into being, and in fact everything that we desire is her desire. There can be nothing else! Beyond the whole universe has desired to be us and every thought we have is a reflection of that infinite shakti. We need only be careful that following our desires bring us into a greater relationship with Chitta, because sometimes she desires to hide herself even more. But eventually she can only love herself.

2) Nothing is seperate from us. The scriptures state that the most terrible form of Lord Shiva, known as Rudra, the destroyer, gets his shakti, his power, from Lakshmi, the most beautiful, abundant, smiling, genorous and glorious form of the goddess you can imagine. She love us so much that she will let us reject her blessings.

There is great power in the experience that nothing is seperate from us, and everything is a manifestation of Lakshmi or Chitta. Take the most macho, annoying person you know. If they are moving, they are shakti, if they are breathing, they are shakti, whatever you see is shakti.

And so are you!

So, if you want to have an effect on the annoying people in your life, the first thing you must do is to experience them as nothing else than another facet of yourself. If you seperate yourself and say, "I am good, that person is bad, I am not that person." You lose all your power to affect them. You build a wall, and that's violent.

If you see them as nothing other than the form of the shakti, twisted up in some wierd shape, or covered up like a glove on your own hand, there is some communication that goes on between you. There are no walls. When there are no walls, love can conquer fear.

This is the key to humanity's survival. When we are in a situation with someone we don't like, we can not seperate ourselves from them, and feel that we are not them because they appear so different from us. We must instead pull them into us. When someone hurts you, it is as if they are a cut on your pinky finger. If you build a wall and try to seperate yourself from your finger, it will hurt more than if you show greater love. Love is stronger than fear, if it wasn't there wouldn't be a universe anyhow because nothing would hold it together.

When someone makes you angry, picture the person in your mind. Then you feel the anger, then just feel the anger. You are making the anger yourself, it doesn't exist anywhere else, not in the person or the relationship, just in you. So experience this anger, let it do it's thing, but do not act on it. It will not last forever. Eventually it will dissipate into pure energy and then you can ask yourself, "How do I show love in the face of something that I don't like?"

My teacher Douglas Brooks brings the core teachings of non-dual tantric philosophy into what he calls the triatic heart. There is you and there is me. An apparent duality, seperateness. The triatic heart then looks at this as:
1) I am you. This means I am everything, including you and myself.
2) I am nothing but you. This means that I am only you, indeed you are yourself.
3) I am not you. This means that I am only me.
These 3 "rules", or observations rather, exist BECAUSE of eachother, not instead of eachother. They actually support eachother. If you can grasp this, you can begin to feel what non dual tantric philosophy is all about. And it is a feeling, more than a conceptualization.

So that's the "what", now here's the "how":

Keep breathing into your heart. Everything is there. Every great teacher, every ashram or holy place, even the power of the stars themselves is accesible through your heart, right here, right now.

It's all just a bunch of shakti playing with itself anyhow...

clay Ghee lamps

Hello,
I was shopping today at our local Indian grocery, and they had the sweetest clay lamps, the size of your palm. they were a quarter each...
they were giving torn pieces of cloth with them, I supposed that they were for the wick. I should just put a small bit of ghee in there and dowse the cloth with a bit of ghee, and lay it in there on the lip to burn for awhile? Can you tell me how to correctly use these? Is it too late to light for diwali? Can I light them to also guide my estranged love home and keep them in the window? I was not able to have Lakshmi puja or Ganesh puja in our store yet, so I was buying some supplies, and couldn't resist these. I might go and get some more, they are so darling! :)

The Goddess Laxmi Story!

In a town, in South India, two farmer brothers, lived in their ancesteral house. The elder brother was blessed and was doing well in life, while the others lot was not so rosy, and he found it hard to make the ends meet.
The Brothers were blessed with two daughters each, with time, they came to their marriageable age. Soon the elder brother's daughters were married well off while the younger brother's daughters did not find a ideal match. But as the days were getting on the younger brother, searched and got his daughters married to boys fit to his standards and stations.
The youngest of the daughters called Rukmani, was a woman blessed with unparalleled beauty, delicately fair complexioned, doe eyed, docile and mannerred, she entered her husband's house and immediately took control of the household which everybody was happy to hand over to her.
Slowly she managed and regulated the people and brought everything in a systematic order. Now everyone worked together, During the day when the menfolks away working in the fields the wives got together and went to the nearby forest to get Tendu leaves used to make hand rolled Beedees ( mini cigars) and rolled very high quality beedees which soon became famous all over the town. They had two square meals a day everyday, and enjoyed comforts they did not before Rukmani came.
One day, as Rukmani was sitting, in the open inner-courtyard, cleaning the rice, suddenly a beautiful Gold Chain fell upon the rice heap, which she quickly picked up and hid it within the folds of her sari. After a while the kings announcer cameby, and announced, that the Queen had lost her Golden Necklace. Finders, who returns it in person, will suitably rewarded.
Rukmani new the chain she had found, could belong to the Queen alone, and no one else. So she pondered and called the family together, and told them of the matter. Next day Rukmani along with her father-in-law and husband went to the Kings court and returned the necklace.
Happily the King announced that he would give her anything her heart desired,only she had to ask for it.
Rukmani then very humbly said, "Your majesty, on the comming Purnima (Full moon night)
let not a single light burn in the entire kingdom, not even your own palace Sire. Only light will allowed to burn in my hut. Thats all l ask."
King and his courtiers were taken aback, but having announced his gift, he ordered what Rukmani has asked.
Returning home, she called the angry family together, and said.
"My father, elder brothers, sisters and respected husband, I know you all are angry at me for asking such a silly request from the king, when we could have the riches of the seven worlds.But please bear with me and after the full moon night you all shall have blessings of Lakshmi Goddess on our house, forever. But you all will have to do what I say."
Rukmani's father-in-law who knew her to be intelligent, ordered everyone to listen and do what she asked.
"Not an Order, dear father, but a request. First we must apply white wash the house, pave the floor properly, shine all the brass utensils and clean the copper ones till they glitter like pure and burnished gold. Then on the full moon night father you, and appa (elderbrother) and Chechi (Sister-in-law) will stand the front door, and you brother, dear hushband and sister will stand at the rear enterance. I will be busy in performing worship. By midnight three ladies dressed in all the fineries come to the door, and demanding to enter the house, to which you must say, Okey we will allow you to enter our house but you must promise to forever stay in our house and never leaveit for a single moment. (this she said to her father-in-law) and turning to her husband, she continued, you will go the rear door and as soon the three beautiful ladies enter our house you will find three ladies dressed in old tattered saries, dirty and unkempt wanting to leave from the rear door. which you must not allow, when the insist then you must make them promise that they would not return to this house ever in there life time. and once they promise only then allow them to go saying go then and take all your belongings and go".
So everybody got together and did what Rukmani directed and soon the hut began looking prosperous and brightly done up. The utensils glowed as if they belonged a gold merchant.
On the night of the full moon, the entire kingdom was dark with not a single light burning anywhere, Soon at midnight, Goddess Lakshmi, in the company of her sister Prosperty and Good health, came to the doors of Rukmani's house, and demanded entry, the old man said then, "Mothers, we can allow you to enter the house only if you promise to stay in this house forever and never leave it for a moment." the three ladies willing promised, and they were allowed to enter, as soon as they entered, the three dirty unkempt ladies tried to run out of the rear door, but were stopped from doing so, till they promised never to return to the house even for a moment for the entire period of their life." the ladies quickly promised to do so, and the husband then said, "Ok you troublesome creatures, leave and take all your belonging with you. and never return." So hasitly, Poverty, ill-luck, and sickness left running out of the house in great speed.
As soon Goddess Lakshmi entered the house, the entire house glowed with goodness, prosperity and good health.
From following day, the conditions of Rukmani's house changed well being, seemed to glow out of each nook and corner of the house, soon their days of poverty hardship passed away. and they gained a very high place in the society. Rukmani glowed with pride and her family basked in its radiance.

Jai Lakshmi Maa!
Yesterday, Diwali, I got a phone call from one of my former healing/acupuncture patients who loves the music... she was sending me a check to help pay for the expenses of our Oregon tour. Then, I found a money order for $100 in a drawer when I was looking for something for the puja.
When I went to the grocery store to buy flowers for the Lakshmi and Kali pujas (we do two on Diwali)... I ran into the woman who had come to a Lakshmi puja I did last spring where she had asked if I took it on the road, as she had a friend in Oregon who'd love to host one... well, we are leaving for Oregon on Monday, because her friend is sponsoring three events we are doing there. It was so auspicious. Of course, we invited her to our home puja and she came and the energy was beautiful!
It was a great opportunity to acknowledge her appreciation of my offering, so we could acknowledge her offering of the connection, to be able to do more offering of the calling and surrender to the Devi's Love --- Jai Lakshmi Maa!

In a rerun of similar incidents claimed to have taken place across the country in 1995, a large number of people queued up outside temples in Mathura and nearby holy cities of Vrindavan and Govardhan in UP, Vadodara in Gujarat and Kurukshetra in Haryana and Ludhiana in Punjab following claims that the Deities are taking milk offered to them. "A cup of milk was offered to Durgaji in Rama Nand Ashram Goverdhan this evening and she was not only pleased but has drank all. It is a good omen and the future of the country is bright," noted Saint Mahamandaleshwar Krishna Das Kanchan Maharaj said in Mathura. (HPI note: The 1995 "Milk Miracle" in which Lord Ganesha consumed milk was witnessed by thousands of devotees in countries around the world, as well as video-taped.)

saḥ — that; tvam — You; mama — of me; api — also; acyuta — O infallible one; śīrṣṇi — on the head; vanditam — worshiped; kara-ambujam — Your lotus hand; yat — which; tvat — by You; adhāyi — placed; sātvatām — on the head of the devotees; bibharṣi — You maintain; mām — me; lakṣma — as an insignia on Your chest; vareṇya — O worshipable one; māyayā — with deceit; kaḥ — who; īśvarasya — of the supremely powerful controller; īhitam — the desires; ūhitum — to understand by reason and argument; vibhuḥ — is able; iti — thus.

TRANSLATION

O infallible one, Your lotus palm is the source of all benediction. Therefore Your pure devotees worship it, and You very mercifully place Your hand on their heads. I wish that You may also place Your hand on My head, for although You already bear my insignia of golden streaks on Your chest, I regard this honor as merely a kind of false prestige for me. You show Your real mercy to Your devotees, not to me. Of course, You are the supreme absolute controller, and no one can understand Your motives.

PURPORT

In many places, the śāstras describe the Supreme Personality of Godhead as being more inclined toward His devotees than toward His wife, who always remains on His chest. In Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam (11.14.15) it is stated:

na tathā me priyatama

ātma-yonir na śańkaraḥ

na ca sańkarṣaṇo na śrīr

naivātmā ca yathā bhavān

Here Kṛṣṇa plainly says that His devotees are more dear to Him than Lord Brahmā, Lord Śiva, Lord Sańkarṣaṇa (the original cause of creation), the goddess of fortune or even His own Self. Elsewhere in Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam (10.9.20) Śukadeva Gosvāmī says,

nemam viriñco na bhavo

na śrīr apy ańga saḿśrayā

prasādaḿ lebhire gopī

yat tat prāpa vimuktidāt

The Supreme Lord, who can award liberation to anyone, showed more mercy toward the gopīs than to Lord Brahmā, Lord Śiva or even the goddess of fortune, who is His own wife and is associated with His body. Similarly, Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam (10.47.60) also states:

nāyaḿ śriyo 'ńga u nitānta-rateḥ prasādaḥ

svar-yoṣitāḿ nalina-gandha-rucāḿ kuto 'nyāḥ

rāsotsave 'sya bhuja-daṇḍa-gṛhīta-kaṇṭha-

labdhāśiṣāḿ ya udagād vraja-sundarīṇām

"The gopīs received benedictions from the Lord that neither Lakṣmīdevī nor the most beautiful dancers in the heavenly planets could attain. In the rāsa dance, the Lord showed His favor to the most fortunate gopīs by placing His arms on their shoulders and dancing with each of them individually. No one can compare with the gopīs, who received the causeless mercy of the Lord."

In the Caitanya-caritāmṛta it is said that no one can receive the real favor of the Supreme Personality of Godhead without following in the footsteps of the gopīs. Even the goddess of fortune could not receive the same favor as the gopīs, although she underwent severe austerities and penances for many years. Lord Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu discusses this point with Vyeńkaṭa Bhaṭṭa in Caitanya-caritāmṛta (Madhya 9.111-131): "The Lord inquired from Vyeńkaṭa Bhaṭṭa, 'Your worshipable goddess of fortune, Lakṣmī, always remains on the chest of Nārāyaṇa, and she is certainly the most chaste woman in the creation. However, My Lord is Lord Śrī Kṛṣṇa, a cowherd boy engaged in tending cows. Why is it that Lakṣmī, being such a chaste wife, wants to associate with My Lord? Just to associate with Kṛṣṇa, Lakṣmī abandoned all transcendental happiness in Vaikuṇṭha and for a long time accepted vows and regulative principles and performed unlimited austerities.'

"Vyeńkaṭa Bhaṭṭa replied, 'Lord Kṛṣṇa and Lord Nārāyaṇa are one and the same, but the pastimes of Kṛṣṇa are more relishable due to their sportive nature. They are very pleasing for Kṛṣṇa's śaktis. Since Kṛṣṇa and Nārāyaṇa are both the same personality, Lakṣmī's association with Kṛṣṇa did not break her vow of chastity. Rather, it was in great fun that the goddess of fortune wanted to associate with Lord Kṛṣṇa. The goddess of fortune considered that her vow of chastity would not be damaged by her relationship with Kṛṣṇa. Rather, by associating with Kṛṣṇa she could enjoy the benefit of the rāsa dance. If she wanted to enjoy herself with Kṛṣṇa what fault is there? Why are you joking so about this?'

"Lord Caitanya Mahāprabhu replied, 'I know that there is no fault in the goddess of fortune, but still she could not enter into the rāsa dance. We hear this from revealed scriptures. The authorities of Vedic knowledge met Lord Rāmacandra in Daṇḍakāraṇya, and by their penances and austerities, they were allowed to enter into the rāsa dance. But can you tell me why the goddess of fortune, Lakṣmī, could not get that opportunity? '

"To this Vyeńkaṭa Bhaṭṭa replied, 'I cannot enter into the mystery of this incident. I am an ordinary living being. My intelligence is limited, and I am always disturbed. How can I understand the pastimes of the Supreme Lord? They are deeper than millions of oceans.'

"Lord Caitanya replied, 'Lord Kṛṣṇa has a specific characteristic. He attracts everyone's heart by the mellow of His personal conjugal love. By following in the footsteps of the inhabitants of the planet known as Vrajaloka or Goloka Vṛndāvana, one can attain the shelter of the lotus feet of Śrī Kṛṣṇa. However, the inhabitants of that planet do not know that Lord Kṛṣṇa is the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Unaware that Kṛṣṇa is the Supreme Lord, the residents of Vṛndāvana like Nanda Mahārāja, Yaśodādevī and the gopīs treat Kṛṣṇa as their beloved son or lover. Mother Yaśodā accepts Him as her son and sometimes binds Him to a grinding mortar. Kṛṣṇa's cowherd boy friends think He is an ordinary boy and get up on His shoulders. In Goloka Vṛndāvana no one has any desire other than to love Kṛṣṇa.' "

The conclusion is that one cannot associate with Kṛṣṇa unless he has fully received the favor of the inhabitants of Vrajabhūmi. Therefore if one wants to be delivered by Kṛṣṇa directly, he must take to the service of the residents of Vṛndāvana, who are unalloyed devotees of the Lord.

Radharani was born with her eyes closed, and the first time Lord Krishna appeared before her she opened her eyes, so the first person she ever saw was Krishna! She is Lord Krishna's eternal servant. Even she serves Krishna. And from her come expansions such as Laxmidevi, who serves Lord Narayana, Sita, who serves Lord Rama, and so on.
It is said that Ravana wanted to enjoy Sita without Rama, or some people wish to enjoy Laxmi without Narayana. This means we want the wealth of the Goddess of fortune, but we don't want to serve God(to those who this applies to). Still, it is better to worship Laxmi for material benefits than nothing at all. And devotees of Lord Krishna offer all respects to goddess laxmi as Krishna's servant. Even Laxmi wishes to become a gopi, a maidservant in the mood of a cowherd girl in Vrindavan, Krishna's village. But due to the fact that she is so opulent she cannot enter into that mood, so they say.
She is also known as "chanchala", flickering. Laxmidevi and her wealth usually don't stay in any place for very long. Maybe a few generations if someone is lucky enough to be born into a wealthy family. For most people, she comes and goes. But if we worship Krishna, and approach Him through his devotee Radha(Radha means one who worships Krishna best), Krishna will never leave.

Ladybugs...and Lakshmi!!!

as I was typing...I felt a tickle on my right hand...t'was a ladybug! I moved it...it came back...I acknowledged it , then I put it on a chair next to me...and it flew off!
Funny (its January 21st...I live in Northeast of America!)...then I remembered a dear friend recently told me that ladybugs are Sacred creatures to/of Maha Lakshmi...has anyone else heard this?!
I know from Japanese and Swiss friends that ladybugs represent Good Luck and +++Fortune in their countries' mythology!
They Are cute...and Red (one of Lakshmi's colours!) Anyone know any stories/myths?

The conflict related to construction of Krishna Followers Temple gained momentum Saturday. Moscow authorities voiced intention to take out the allotment allocated for building the Vedic Culture Temple, Krishna followers responded by a hunger strike.
More than 500 people went on a long-term hunger strike Saturday, November 12, 2005, said Sergey Andreev, leader of the Moscow community of Krishna followers, in a move to preserve the allotment allocated in Moscow for the temple construction.

As a religious organization, Hare Krishna was officially acknowledged in Russia in 1988. Now the country has 106 registered communities of Krishna followers and over 300 parishes.

Moscow Mayor Yury Luzhkov sealed the ruling on constructing cultural premises for Krishna followers in Moscow in January 2004. The document sanctioned construction of the Vedic Center on the area of 1.05 hectares at 39 Leningrad Ave. to replace the two-store building demolished in Khoroshevkoe Avenue. To oppose construction, the orthodox followers staged a protest rally and vowed “to lie under bulldozers at the constriction site, “as this premise will desecrate Moscow,” they said.

As a result, Luzhkov called off his ruling on October 7. “We think the authorities may proceed with decisive actions to expel Indian and Moscow Vaishnavs from habitable land, in which they have invested a lot,” Andreev said. “We are truly concerned. We may be on the street deprived of even a temporarily temple.”

Canto 5: The Creative Impetus
Chapter 18: The Prayers Offered to the Lord by the Residents of Jambūdvīpa

SB 5.18.17: Accompanied during the daytime by the sons of the Prajāpati [the predominating deities of the days] and accompanied at night by his daughters [the deities of the nights], Lakshmīdevī worships the Lord during the period known as the Samvatsara in His most merciful form as Kāmadeva. Fully absorbed in devotional service, she chants the following mantras.

SB 5.18.18: Let me offer my respectful obeisances unto the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Hrishīkeśa, the controller of all my senses and the origin of everything. As the supreme master of all bodily, mental and intellectual activities, He is the only enjoyer of their results. The five sense objects and eleven senses, including the mind, are His partial manifestations. He supplies all the necessities of life, which are His energy and thus nondifferent from Him, and He is the cause of everyone's bodily and mental prowess, which is also nondifferent from Him. Indeed, He is the husband and provider of necessities for all living entities. The purpose of all the Vedas is to worship Him. Therefore let us all offer Him our respectful obeisances. May He always be favorable toward us in this life and the next.

SB 5.18.19: My dear Lord, You are certainly the fully independent master of all the senses. Therefore all women who worship You by strictly observing vows because they wish to acquire a husband to satisfy their senses are surely under illusion. They do not know that such a husband cannot actually give protection to them or their children. Nor can he protect their wealth or duration of life, for he himself is dependent on time, fruitive results and the modes of nature, which are all subordinate to You.

SB 5.18.20: He alone who is never afraid but who, on the contrary, gives complete shelter to all fearful persons can actually become a husband and protector. Therefore, my Lord, you are the only husband, and no one else can claim this position. If you were not the only husband, You would be afraid of others. Therefore persons learned in all Vedic literature accept only Your Lordship as everyone's master, and they think no one else a better husband and protector than You.

SB 5.18.21: My dear Lord, You automatically fulfill all the desires of a woman who worships Your lotus feet in pure love. However, if a woman worships Your lotus feet for a particular purpose, You also quickly fulfill her desires, but in the end she becomes broken-hearted and laments. Therefore one need not worship Your lotus feet for some material benefit.

SB 5.18.22: O supreme unconquerable Lord, when they become absorbed in thoughts of material enjoyment, Lord Brahmā and Lord Śiva, as well as other demigods and demons, undergo severe penances and austerities to receive my benedictions. But I do not favor anyone, however great he may be; unless he is always engaged in the service of Your lotus feet. Because I always keep You within my heart, I cannot favor anyone but a devotee.

Mini ritual for Diwali: A MUST DO.

A small ritual for the coming Tuesday..the 'new moon' NIGHT. Please check this out at

your respective places. On this new moon day, India has a festival of light called "Diwali".

It also has a lot of other cosmic significances too.
There is a small ritual to be done to attract money.
On a ceramic plate, place some diskettes of camphor. Wear red and face the west

direction. Burn in it cloves. Take care that the cloves should be with it's 'ball' on its

apex.The top. Let the cloves burn completely to black ash.If they have not fully burnt out,

add some more camphor diskettes.Take this black powder & put it in a small silver box &

place it wherever you place your money.Must be a black ash...completely burnt out.

All the time while the clove is being burnt, keep on chanting "AUM HREENGM SHREENGM

NAMAH".You will start getting 'at ease' just after 40 days of the ritual.I've spelt the

Mantra AS IT SHOULD BE PRONOUNCED.Many erroneously spell it as Hring or Hrim. Both

Shrim, as many of you know, is the seed sound for Lakshmi.
Hrim is the seed sound for Maa in all her forms. Kamala is a name of Lakshmi, and is the form of Maa Lakshmi in the tradition of the Mahavidyas.
Prasida means, "Please".

Small Sabari Siddhi..

A small recitation, done during Navratra (October 9 days from 4th to12th)..recited just 27

times, facing north in the nights..is highly effective Siddhi to ward off every calamity.

Must be repeated every year during Navratra. One must have a Ma Durga photo/idol in

front. Burn an oil lamp to HER right ; incense to HER left. Sitting on red asana &

offerring red flowers to her ..recite:-

"AUM Namo-a-stute Bhagwate, Paarshwa Chandraa-dharendra Padmaavati Sahitaaye ,may

abheeshta siddhim;
Dushtagraha bhasm bhakshyam swaaha,
Swaami prasaade kuroo kuroo swaaha;
Hillihilli Maatangani Swaaha,
Swaami prasaade kuroo kuroo swaaha".

Daily 27 times for 9 nights of Navratra. When in danger, just recite it 7 times & blow

thrice shoulder to shoulder. You will be safe.

It is too vast and beyond the scope of this letter to write the ACTUAL spiritual aspect of

Navratri ( Nav=Nine: Raatri (as it is pronounced)=Nights). There are two such Navaratris in

a year. One around March and one around October/Nov....depending on the Hindu Lunar

Months. Again, there are two 'facets' of Navratri. One the Pauraanic (ancient folklore)

aspect and one metaphysical aspect. I guess you may FIND latter too on the internet. Just

type "Navratri" on Google.

Siddhi means 'attainment'....especially spiritual kind. And the person who has attained

Siddhi..is called Siddha Purush. Purush meaning Man. "The man who has attained". This

attainment can be got by many methods..but Mantras (incantations in a specific way for a

specific purpose) is the BASE.

Durga is a combination of Duh (not as in US DUHH..lol) + gaah. The combo makes it

Durga. Duh.. D pronounced in softer note as the French do. Duh means bad/evil..Gah

means to 'ward off'. So Durga means she who wards off the bad/evil etc. And there are

stories about her.

I was directed to this by a dear friend and wellwisher Mike DeVito. Everything about me can be gathered, both, from my profile, as

I m sharing with you one more story.. when krishna gave darshan to peoples as god.. .. well he was as human..so every one seen
but giving darshan to every one as god...

once.. when mahabharat bettel was ready to start .. yudhishtar still dont wanted bettel with his cousins.. so he want to send shanti dhoot ( peace messanger) so he appointed krishna.. for that..

Krishna new it wont help.. ( well he knew every thing.. due to he was god).. he went to mahasabha.. and give his peace message to dhratrashtra.. with some argument with dhuryodhan.. dhuryodhan...get angree with lord krishna.. and give order to arrest him..

krishna reply with polite.. according rules you cant arrest or harm to pease messanger.. but duryodhan.. didnt hear him.. and gave order to arrest him..

krishna reply ok you can try it...
and when soldairs went to arrest him.. krishna become large and large.. much large.....ever any one can see...bishma dronacharya kripacharay vidhur karan and many good pepoles there.. was glad to see krishna darshan... even gods came in sky to see krishna darshan...but duryodhan and similar peoples was blind with shine of krishna...and cover the face with hand....

this is mean its beauty in your eye.. what your soul can see..

i dont know if you all read mahabharat.. becuase. if you want to know much more about krishna.. you must read mahabharat...

Krishna about Karan (mahabharat)

well as you requested.. first of all i m sharing with you.. what krishna think about Karan (eldest son of Kunti)
as you all know he was first son of kunti before her wedding.. as she got power by god.. she can think and pray.. with any god.. she can get son with him..

so when she just got power.. she was trying with SUN and got son as karan...but she leave her in river.. as she got later married.. and got 5 sons.. but karan was raised by one tribal cast.. family.. but pandav (kunti sons) was belong with royal family...

so later in mahabharat..he never get approved as Kshatriya.... but Duryodhan..approve him as freind.. and make him king of angad.. so he blessed with his friendship...

later in story.. when bettel start between.. karuav and pandav... I m reminding you.. karan was real eldest brother of pandav's.. but was in bettel against to them.. due to his freindship.. with duryodhan (eldest Kaurav).. now that was introdcution of him..

Now the main topic...

1. in between bettel .. once arjun and karan was face each other.. every time..arjun.. attack karan.. karan step back 5 steps.. and krishna smiles.. .. but when karan attack on arjun.. .. arjun only one step back.. krishna say (bahut khub) super..... arjun.. stop for while and ask.. krishna.. what is mean.. when i attack on him he move five step back.. and when he attack on me.. i only one step back.. so how can he super then me........

krishna say.. i m appricate with him.. becuase remeber i m with you.. you can only.. move him 5 step back.. but he can move you and me one step back.. remeber i m god.. the world is in me.. so he can step back all world .....

2. as karan was only person in world who never refused to donate any thing he has been asked..so as he was as son.. krishna.. knew.. that its impossible to beat him in bettel.. so krishna went to him.. as a sadhu.. and beg promise from him...karan.. ask.. him what do you want.. ask me.. he ask.. his kundal kawach.. ( its golden kawach he had on his body since he born).. and it was his power... karan say.. no one can ask me this .. no one need this.. you are krishna.. i know.. but i will give it to you..becuase i never refuse any one.. and its my plessure.. god.. came to be beg something...
so he took off and give to him..

3. later krishna introduce him.. that he is also son of kunti and brother of all pandav he is fighting with them... he say.. yes he know from begain.. and he was waiting.. to hear from.. krishna.. as god.. krishna ask him.. if you know they are your brothers.. how can you kill them...he say.. when i born.. my mother leave me.. as she have need... .. i m kshatriya...but i was always known as tribal.. kid...no one approve me but my freind.....he is my freind.. i know he is on wrong path.. but i m promised with my freindship.. he is first person in my life.. then my brothers..

4. krishna asked him.. you know you are eldest kid of this royalti.. if you are known.. as eldest kid.. pandav will never refused.. to have you king.. dhuryodhan is your best freind.. he will accept you.. first of all as king.. so where is bettel need...so why dont u approved yourself......

5. he say every thing has reasons.. this bettel is reason.. and you are god you know reason....you are the only reason of this bettel (mahabharat is largest bettel on earth ever)...

6. krishna say,s every thing come with reason.. this bettel is also reason.. becuase as much as power this family have.. no one can have ever.. this family can rule.. world.. even gods cant bettel them... they are so powerful.. its dangerous for nature..so only they can beat each others.. so this bettel is only that reason

any way.. if you borred.. you may all knows it.. but i have read all indian epic.. each word.. and i know every topic.. may be some dont know all.. its something speical.. to know as personality of krishna...

SYNONYMS

yuvām — both of you; tu — indeed; viśvasya — of the universe; vibhū — the proprietors; jagataḥ — of the universe; kāraṇam — the cause; param — supreme; iyam — this; hi — certainly; prakṛtiḥ — energy; sūkṣmā — difficult to understand; māyā-śaktiḥ — the internal energy; duratyayā — difficult to overcome.

TRANSLATION

My Lord Viṣṇu and mother Lakṣmī, goddess of fortune, you are the proprietors of the entire creation. Indeed, you are the cause of the creation. Mother Lakṣmī is extremely difficult to understand because she is so powerful that the jurisdiction of her power is difficult to overcome. Mother Lakṣmī is represented in the material world as the external energy, but actually she is always the internal energy of the Lord.

Śrīmad Bhāgavatam 6.19.12

tasyā adhīśvaraḥ sākṣāt

tvam eva puruṣaḥ paraḥ

TRANSLATION

My Lord, You are the master of energy, and therefore You are the Supreme Person. You are sacrifice [yajña] personified. Lakṣmī, the embodiment of spiritual activities, is the original form of worship offered unto You, whereas You are the enjoyer of all sacrifices.

TRANSLATION

Mother Lakṣmī, who is here, is the reservoir of all spiritual qualities, whereas You manifest and enjoy all these qualities. Indeed, You are actually the enjoyer of everything. You live as the Supersoul of all living entities, aid the goddess of fortune is the form of their bodies, senses and minds. She also has a holy name and form, whereas You are the support of all such names and forms and the cause for their manifestation.

PURPORT

Madhvācārya, the ācārya of the Tattvavādīs, has described this verse in the following way: "Viṣṇu is described as yajña personified, and mother Lakṣmī is described as spiritual activities and the original form of worship. In fact, they represent spiritual activities and the Supersoul of all yajña. Lord Viṣṇu is the Supersoul even of Lakṣmīdevī, but no one can be the Supersoul of Lord Viṣṇu, for Lord Viṣṇu Himself is the spiritual Supersoul of everyone."

According to Madhvācārya, there are two tattvas, or factors. One is independent, and the other is dependent. The first tattva is the Supreme Lord, Viṣṇu, and the second is the jīva-tattva. Lakṣmīdevī, being dependent on Lord Viṣṇu, is sometimes counted among the jīvas. The Gauḍīya Vaiṣṇavas, however, describe Lakṣmīdevī in accordance with the following two verses from the Prameya-ratnāvalī of Baladeva Vidyābhūṣaṇa. The first verse is a quotation from the Viṣṇu Purāṇa.

nityaiva sā jagan-mātā

viṣṇoḥ śrīr anapāyinī

yathā sarva-gato viṣṇus

tathaiveyaḿ dvijottama

viṣṇoḥ syuḥ śaktayas tisras

tāsu yā kīrtitā parā

saiva śrīs tad-abhinneti

prāha śiṣyān prabhur mahān

"O best of the brāhmaṇas, Lakṣmījī is the constant companion of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Viṣṇu, and therefore she is called anapāyinī. She is the mother of all creation. As Lord Viṣṇu is all-pervading, His spiritual potency, mother Lakṣmī, is also all-pervading." Lord Viṣṇu has three principal potencies — internal, external and marginal. Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu has accepted parā-śakti, the spiritual energy of the Lord, as being identical with the Lord. Thus she is also included in the independent viṣṇu-tattva."

In the Kānti-mālā commentary on the Prameya-ratnāvalī there is this statement: nanu kvacit nitya-mukta jīvatvaḿ lakṣmyāḥ svīkṛtaḿ, tatrāha — prāheti. nityaiveti padye sarva-vyāpti-kathanena kalākāṣṭhety ādi-padya-dvaye, śuddho 'pīty uktā ca mahāprabhunā svaśiṣyān prati lakṣmyā bhagavad-advaitam upadiṣṭam. kvacid yat tasyās tu dvaitam uktaḿ, tat tu tad-āviṣṭa-nitya-mukta jīvam ādāya sańgatamas tu. "Although some authoritative Vaiṣṇava disciplic successions count the goddess of fortune among the ever-liberated living entities (jīvas) in Vaikuṇṭha, Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu, in accordance with the statement in the Viṣṇu Purāṇa, has described Lakṣmī as being identical with the viṣṇu-tattva. The correct conclusion is that the descriptions of Lakṣmī as being different from Viṣṇu are stated when an eternally liberated living entity is imbued with the quality of Lakṣmī; they do not pertain to mother Lakṣmī, the eternal consort of Lord Viṣṇu."

It is also stated here that in the Vaikuṇṭha planets the goddesses of fortune are faultless. Generally the goddess of fortune does not remain steadily in one place. Her name is Cañcalā, which means "one who is not steady." We find, therefore, that a man who is very rich may become the poorest of the poor. Another example is Rāvaṇa. Rāvaṇa took away Lakṣmī, Sītājī, to his kingdom, and instead of being happy by the grace of Lakṣmī, his family and his kingdom were vanquished. Thus Lakṣmī in the house of Rāvaṇa is Cañcalā, or unsteady. Men of Rāvaṇa's class want Lakṣmī only, without her husband, Nārāyaṇa; therefore they become unsteady due to Lakṣmījī. Materialistic persons find fault on the part of Lakṣmī, but in Vaikuṇṭha Lakṣmījī is fixed in the service of the Lord. In spite of her being the goddess of fortune, she cannot be happy without the grace of the Lord. Even the goddess of fortune needs the Lord's grace in order to be happy, yet in the material world even Brahmā, the highest created being, seeks the favor of Lakṣmī for happiness.

jānu-dvayam — up to the knees; jalaja-locanayā — lotus-eyed; jananyā — mother; lakṣmyā — by Lakṣmī; akhilasya — of the entire universe; sura-vanditayā — worshiped by the demigods; vidhātuḥ — of Brahmā; ūrvoḥ — at the thighs; nidhāya — having placed; kara-pallava-rociṣā — with her lustrous fingers; yat — which; saḿlālitam — massaged; hṛdi — in the heart; vibhoḥ — of the Lord; abhavasya — transcendental to material existence; kuryāt — one should meditate.

TRANSLATION

The yogī should fix in his heart the activities of Lakṣmī, the goddess of fortune, who is worshiped by all demigods and is the mother of the supreme person, Brahmā. She can always be found massaging the legs and thighs of the transcendental Lord, very carefully serving Him in this way.

PURPORT

Brahmā is the appointed lord of the universe. Because his father is Garbhodakaśāyī Viṣṇu, Lakṣmī, the goddess of fortune, is automatically his mother. Lakṣmījī is worshiped by all demigods and by the inhabitants of other planets as well. Human beings are also eager to receive favor from the goddess of fortune. Lakṣmī is always engaged in massaging the legs and thighs of the Supreme Personality of Godhead Nārāyaṇa, who is lying on the ocean of Garbha within the universe. Brahmā is described here as the son of the goddess of fortune, but actually he was not born of her womb. Brahmā takes his birth from the abdomen of the Lord Himself. A lotus flower grows from the abdomen of Garbhodakaśāyī Viṣṇu, and Brahmā is born there. Therefore Lakṣmījī's massaging of the thighs of the Lord should not be taken as the behavior of an ordinary wife. The Lord is transcendental to the behavior of the ordinary male and female. The word abhavasya is very significant, for it indicates that He could produce Brahmā without the assistance of the goddess of fortune.

Since transcendental behavior is different from mundane behavior, it should not be taken that the Lord receives service from His wife just as a demigod or human being might receive service from his wife. It is advised here that the yogī always keep this picture in his heart. The devotee always thinks of this relationship between Lakṣmī and Nārāyaṇa; therefore he does not meditate on the mental plane as impersonalists and voidists do.

Bhava means "one who accepts a material body," and abhava means "one who does not accept a material body but descends in the original, spiritual body." Lord Nārāyaṇa is not born of anything material. Matter is generated from matter, but He is not born of matter. Brahmā is born after the creation, but since the Lord existed before the creation, the Lord has no material body.
